Some people have the habit of cursing. “To hell! Damn it!” In truth, these words shouldn’t be spoken too often. If they are, it becomes second nature to us, and those words can become our reality!

Each sentence, down to each word, carries energy. This is what happens when we “cast spells or curses.” Although this sounds sinister, spells are, in fact, quite neutral. It all depends on our state of mind when we use them.

To be honest, the world’s most powerful magic word is none other than your own name. Since we were young, we have often been asked “what is your name?” This is the name which we call ourselves, and use in our signatures.

So there is no other word which works more magic for us than our own names, because, being our social tag for life, it has an all-pervasive influence in our lives. We may forget everything else, but it will be difficult to forget our own name.

Therefore, if we absolutely dislike our name or nickname, we should do something about it. Why carry around a name which stirs up negative feelings in us? If someone calls us by a name which we do not feel like responding to, but have to anyway, then it creates conflict in us. Therefore, to get rid of that feeling, we need to come up with another name that we can be proud of, and communicate clearly to others.

Every name that is given to us by our elders and parents carries deep personal, familial, and cultural connections. If introducing ourselves with our name gives us joy, others will feel that joy too. And, if a name change can have this effect, then it is a good change.

Once the name takes root, it is as if a spell has been cast, and things will move in a good direction. More important, however, is that a change of name leads to a change of heart. When we change our outlook to a more positive one, our lives also change for the better.

“Change our name, so that it gives us joy; change our outlook and good things will come our way.” — Lee Feng San Shifu
